MONDAY, May 29, 2022 (HealthDay News) -- The new regulatory timeline is expected to be posted by the end of the year, but it's still uncertain how long it will take for the drug to enter the market, with a new study suggesting that the approval may be more than double the average of the other two-year time frame.
And the new study from the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that hair loss could be "significantly better" for people taking finasteride than for those taking placebo or finasteride alone, the authors of a new study in the journal said.
Finasteride (brand name Propecia) is the drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia. It also helps to thin the hair on the scalp and can slow down hair loss, although the effects are generally modest and last about two years.
Propecia, available as an oral tablet, can also be used to treat other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, but it has been linked to hair loss in a few studies, the study authors said.
"The new clinical study is very interesting, because it is an observational study, so it's not a continuous phase II randomized clinical trial," said Dr. Mark D. Miller, chairman of dermatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and chair of the department of dermatology and pediatrics at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
Androgenetic alopecia is a common hereditary pattern of hair loss, causing it to shrink, and it can take decades to find a cure. It is estimated that the lifetime prevalence of androgenetic alopecia in the general population is 2-3% and it can take years to cure, Miller said.
"There are about 1,500 people affected by male pattern hair loss in the United States, and that number can be very high," he said.
Miller said the study was designed to look at the results of more than 10,000 post-marketing surveillance studies that have been conducted in the U. S., and that the findings of the study will be reported as soon as possible.
But he added that he was not sure if the study was just one that looked at the average of all the studies, because he wasn't sure how many other studies looked at the average.
Durex Pharmaceuticals, based in Tempe, Arizona, is one of the companies conducting the new study.
"That could make sense, because most of these studies look at a relatively small number of patients," Miller said. "But that's because we're really focusing on people who have had an initial recurrence."
Dr. John M. Ricks, director of dermatology at the American Academy of Dermatology, said the new study suggests finasteride and placebo could be used to treat hair loss in women with male pattern hair loss and the researchers had no idea how the results would change women.
"There is still very little research on this problem for women and the research we have done is very good," Ricks said.
Finasteride, available as an oral tablet, has also been associated with hair loss in men. In a review of more than 800 clinical trials in men, the researchers said, finasteride appeared to be linked with higher hair loss in some patients.
The company also found that the drug reduced prostate specific antigen levels in men taking finasteride, which was linked to a lower risk of hair loss.
The new study also looked at the results of more than 1,200 men with male pattern baldness treated with finasteride or placebo before and after the drug was taken by the men. And more than 50% of men in the study had some degree of hair loss that occurred after starting the medication, the study authors said.
The new study was the largest study to study the effect of finasteride on hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia. That study, published in the March issue of the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that women taking finasteride had a five-fold increased risk of developing male pattern hair loss, compared with women taking placebo. Researchers also found that women taking finasteride had a seven-fold increased risk of developing male pattern hair loss.
"We think it's important that the public understand what it means if you are suffering from male pattern baldness, the same thing that men do, which is hair loss," said Dr. David E. Rosen, a professor of dermatology and family practice at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Finasteride (Finast) is a medication prescribed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) androgenetic alopecia. It is used to treat both benign and receding hairline. In addition, Finasteride is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride works by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a hormone that causes hair loss in men. It is effective in treating symptoms of hair loss such as dryness and itching, but its use may lead to more serious issues such as a receding hairline and urinary tract infection (UTI). It should not be taken on an empty stomach, as this can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure and further damage to the liver. In rare cases, Finasteride can cause liver damage, and it should be stopped immediately for the time being, even if you have taken the medication. In some cases, Finasteride can cause the skin to become more sensitive to sunlight or ultraviolet light. In these instances, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider before taking this medication.
